2nd Grade – Mrs. Carol (Holbrook) Stephenson

Years at McKinley: 26 years

I was born October 3, l945 in Rochester, New York.  I came to California in the 2nd grade.  I decided then to be a 2nd grade teacher and kept that goal all through school.  I taught my first 2nd grade class in 1970, I have been at McKinley since 1975.  To have taught long enough to have a telephone, carpet, sink, computers, and document camera is truly remarkable.   Yes, there have been a lot of changes, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the McKinley spirit.  This school has always had that “family” feeling for students, parents and staff.  We have always had involved and caring parents, bright and eager students, and committed and creative teachers.  I have been here long enough to actually have taught the 2nd generation.  It is great when former students come back to see themselves in my memory book, to exchange hugs, and to remember fondly their time in 2nd grade.

Drama and music are something I’ve always tried to use in my teaching.  I am totally excited about the IB program.  The attitudes and profiles are something that we want all our students to take with them wherever they go.  For me, the IB program has given me a new excitement and creativity for my teaching.

I have been married to Bill Stephenson since 2007.  He has added a new excitement and adventure into my life as well.  I have done so much traveling since he came into my life.  We live with two very entertaining cats.  We both love to work in our big yard.  My efforts are solely directed to my 19 rose bushes, though.    My favorite color is yellow because it’s so sunny and bright.  I don’t watch a lot of TV.  I love reading People Magazine, the newspaper and doing the crossword puzzle.  I love childrens books with a good story and I am trying to write one myself.
