The McKinley Book Fair is taking place all this week in the auditorium. Students will be visiting the book fair with their classrooms, and parents can go before school or during Thursday night’s Open House, starting at 5:30pm.

At the Book Fair you will find the latest and finest titles for kids, as well as books of interest to parents. And, you can contribute books to your child’s classroom library. The Book Fair is a great way to get everyone excited about reading. See you there!

Too much stuff in the house? Start your spring cleaning and bring us all those gently used items you’d like to donate to the rummage sale!

Collection dates:
5/16 – Wednesday before school and after school
5/17 – Thursday before school and after school (starting at 12:45-1:30)
5/18 – Friday before school and after school

Before school collection time be from 8:45 am – 9:30 am
After school collection time (except Thursday) will from 3:30 pm – 4:00pm

McKinley Teachers Rock the House in Music Video!

Check out the amazing music video that the teachers created to support McKinley students during the STAR testing going on this week and next. Using a Katy Perry song, with custom lyrics by Pam Steckbeck and lead vocals by Danielle Zdunich, the video was shown to students at a rally this morning. Go Cougars!

STAR Testing at McKinley Starts April 30

The specific STAR testing dates for McKinley students will be April 30 – May 3 and May 8 – 10. Students in grades 2-5 will be tested on the California Standards Test (CST), which measures how well students are meeting state standards in English language arts and mathematics. Students in grade 5 are also assessed on science standards.

Please help your children do their best on these tests:
1. Make sure they get plenty of sleep so they are well rested each day.
2. Make sure they start each day with a healthy breakfast.
3. Please do not schedule any appointments during this entire time.
4. Encourage them to do their very best effort!

STAR tests help monitor your child’s achievement and, along with other information, help teachers make decisions about each student’s academic needs. The STAR results are also used by the state to calculate the Academic Performance Index (API) that determines whether schools in California are making progress in improving student achievement. In addition, STAR results are used to determine whether schools and districts are making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as required by the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001.

Variety Show This Friday, March 16

Don’t forget McKinley’s Variety Show this Friday, March 16, at 6:15pm (tickets on sale starting at 5:30pm). Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Snacks and drinks for sale at intermission, as well as raffle tickets to win wonderful prizes.

North Park Farmers’ Market Rebate Program Extended

The North Park Farmers’ Market CASH CROPS program that offers a 5% rebate to McKinley for every dollar spent is being extended to the end of the school year! So, continue to follow these easy steps each time you shop at the Farmers’ Market (every Thursday from 3-7pm, on Herman Street from University to North Park Way and at the CVS lot).

1. Tell farmers and vendors when you purchase that you need ‘school tickets’ (one for each dollar spent).

2. Bring those tickets to the Information Booth at the Market and deposit them in McKinley’s jar. At the end of the program, the market will donate the funds to the McKinley PTC!

51st Annual McKinley Variety Show

It’s time for the 51st Annual McKinley Variety Show and we are looking for students, teachers, and even parents to participate in the show. This year’s Variety Show will be on Friday, March 16th at the North Park Theater. We are really fortunate to have some of the staff from the Junior Theater helping us to put on this year’s production! Try outs will be after school on Wednesday, January 18^th(before school by arrangement). For more information, download flyer.
