Words from the PTC Chair:
CALLING ALL PARENTS, STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND STAFF: Mark these dates in your calendars NOW: Thursday, March 4th at 3:00 and Saturday, May 8th at 10:00 a.m. in front of Centro Cultural de la Raza. We’ve been hearing for months now how devastating the impending budget cuts to education are going to be, but what we have not been hearing nearly enough is that these cuts DO NOT have to happen. In releasing his budget, the Governor said that he was going to protect education but the reality is that he actually proposed close to $2 billion in cuts.   What does that mean for us? Shortening the school year by one week, cutting programming for music/arts, laying off teachers. Our district has already cut 20% of its budget over the last 2 years, we have to say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. On May 8th, a group called Educate for the Future, which was formed by concerned parents, teachers, administrators, and our school board member Richard Barrera, are organizing a rally in Balboa Park to stand up for education.  We are trying to get thousands of people out for this rally.  This is right before the Governor is going to be submitting his May budget revise and the real work on the state budget begins. We’re hoping to send a loud message to our state legislature saying that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! If our schools fail our kids now, it will impact them for the rest of their lives. We all love our children and want the best for them, so we can take two hours out of our busy lives to make a statement.   In the 80′s California was in the top 3 states in terms of funding education, now we’re in the bottom 3.  It’s time this madness stops. I know many of us are not the “rallying” type, but these types of actions have an impact, but only if enough people participate. McKinley is one of the schools closest to Balboa Park, so it is extremely important that we have a strong turnout.   I’d like to be able to say that we will turn out hundreds of people to this rally.   Please sign up at the office, Prime Time, or through our e-mail (mckinleyptc@yahoo.com) to let us know you will be there. Contact Sandy Mattson at mckinleyptc@yahoo.com or calling 619-640-6781 if you’d like to be more involved in this effort. Jim Miller, whose son Walt is in Ms. January’s class, is standing up for Education in a big way. He is joining in a march from Bakersfield to Sacramento that is kicking off on March 5th. A send off rally and day of action is being held on March 4th. We’d like to support Jim, Walt, and Kelly by joining them at the kick off rally, and by writing short paragraphs talking about how these budget cuts have been impacting our kids or better yet, have your kids write the statements themselves. Jim will be reading these statements in gatherings around the state as they march up to Sacramento.   Please send him your statements now:    miller229@earthlink.net or drop them off in the office.
