Description: The Educational Support committee will spearhead efforts to develop programs that support and celebrate our children’s academic experience outside the classroom setting.
Goals: The primary goal of this committee is to assist students and their families in reaching academic proficiency and beyond. This will be accomplished by
- Establishing a mentorship program that reaches out to the larger North Park community (churches, neighborhood, service groups) to recruit volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring to students needing support. Working with teachers we will identify children who will most benefit from mentorship program and establish systems to ensure adequate communication between teachers, mentors, students, and the students’ families.
- Expanding upon the volunteer English as a Second Language (ESL) program for parents of McKinley students. Work with the English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC), ESL volunteers, and McKinley staff to develop “model program” whereby we not only teach ESL classes but also help parents understand their current child’s classroom activities and assignments.
- Identify activities that will “celebrate” our children’s educational achievements and opportunities. Examples include spelling bees, essay and/or poetry contests, establishing sister school program, etc.
Commitment:
- Attend monthly meetings to coordinate activities.
- Help with volunteer recruitment activities
- Help to organize activities.
Volunteer Opportunities (you don’t have to do them all!):
- Outreach to community groups
- Assist with mentorship trainings/support/evaluations
- Help coordinate
- Walkabout coordinator
