Facilities and Beautification Committee

Description: The Facilities and Beautification Committee has been formed to create a school, community and School District awareness of our campus needs and school enhancement opportunities.  Our approach will take two very distint tracks:

- Campus facilities, building upgrades, appurtenances, windows, enhancements, playgrounds, grass areas, etc.
- Site utilization, expansions, reprogramming the site and a joint use park design

Last year we held a very successful design charrette with the school and community stakeholders.  During this three-month process we garnered comments from the public, neighbors, students and facility on the pros/cons of the McKinley campus.  After these design and program elements were discussed and tabulated into our top ten constraints/opportunities we offered some design application sketches, expansion ideas, site reconfigurations, relocations, walls, signs, fencing options, etc.

Goals: The two primary goals of this committee for this upcoming year – one is to work with the school district regarding master planning of the site and second is to obtain School District funding and approval to install ventilation/cooling systems for all our classrooms.  This will be accomplished by:

- Continuing our dialogue with school district representatives to assign us a primary project manager to further develop the McKinley Campus Master Plan.   This will include defining campus facilities needs i.e. school building upgrades (such as relocating the portable classrooms, fencing, site logistic/programming, expansion of the kindergarten area, entryways, etc.) site enhancements, pedestrian access points to name a few.
- Embark upon a strategic alliance with both the City of San Diego and the School District in developing the joint Use Park and approval of a joint use agreement.
- Explore the ideas of community gardens, San Diego zoo plant program, drought tolerant plants, and tree donations for shade.
- Expand our involvement with the school district representative to obtaining necessary funding resources for the installation of ventilation/cooling systems for out new buildings.
- Expand our outreach and presentations to the School Board members and garner funding support for our campus improvements.
