McKinley Garden Work Party-June 8

Principal for a Day Raffle Tickets

One lucky student will be Principal for a Day!

Raffle tickets will be sold 5/30 – 6/2 (Tuesday – Friday) before and after school by the yoga statue.  

The drawing will be held on Monday, 6/5. The new principal will be ruling the school on Thursday, 6/8 and will enjoy the following:

  • Be addressed as “Principal” by all staff and students
  • Shadow the Principal
  • Eat lunch with the Principal, teachers, and staff
  • Broadcast any announcements
  • Visit classrooms, read to the younger grades (depending on age of the winner)
  • Make one rule for the day (within reason and subject to the real Principal’s approval)

North Park Festival of the Arts

npmsfestivaladThe North Park Festival of the Arts is on May 20. It’s a fun community festival that features a hands-on Kids Art Block. McKinley will have a booth and will be doing a really fun art project as well as displaying some of our CRAVE art. Please sign up here for a shift! It’s a fun event to be a part of!

If you can volunteer your time setting up, serving, cleaning up or bringing a dessert for the luncheon, please sign-up here. We are also accepting gift donations for the luncheon raffle.

Crave Art Show – 6/3/2017

2nd Annual CRAVE Art Show

When: June 3rd 2017, 3-7 pm

Where: Bread and Salt, 1955 Julian Ave, San Diego, CA 92113

What: An Art Show to display works by all McKinley students preschool-5th grade. Buona Forchetta will again be there with their amazing pizza and happy smiles. Almost Famous Entertainment will again be our DJ for this event spinning the tunes the kids request, and we will have make-and-take crafts for everyone to enjoy.

Who: Family, friends and neighbors are all invited to celebrate the amazing talent and hard work of all of our McKinley kids. Every month K-5 all have an extra art class we call CRAVE. All of their artwork has been saved all year, mounted nicely, and each and every student will have many of their pieces on display at this years art show! Last year we displayed over 1800 pieces of art all made by McKinley students. This year we plan to do the same.

We will have a sign-up sheet out soon for volunteers to come help with set-up and tear-down. Thanks for all the support this year and we can’t wait to see you all there!


McKINLEY PTC/FOUNDATION OPEN POSITIONS

President (2-year term), duties include:

  • Oversee all efforts of PTC committees, events, fundraisers and other activities
  • Meet with Principal monthly
  • Coordinate and write agenda for 6 Foundation meetings
  • Coordinate and write agenda for 5 PTC meetings
  • Coordinate calendar of activities for the school year
  • Oversee all financials, budgets and expenditures for PTC
  • Oversee communication with parents, teachers and community
  • Attend Foundation and PTC meetings
  • Vote on Board issues
  • Communicate with Board Members

Board Member (2-year term), duties include:

  • Represent general interest of all parents
  • Attend all Board and PTC Meetings
  • Vote on all Board issues
  • Communicate with Board members

Gala Volunteer Exchange

Hello McKinley Families! Our Spring Gala is coming up on April 29th, and we are partnering up with Urban Discovery Academy to exchange volunteers. This means that we will provide about 7-10 people for their event, and they in turn would do the same for our event. This helps insure that all our parents will be having a good time and will be bidding on items instead of running the event.

UDA’s Gala is this Saturday, March 18th from 5:30 to 10. We need about 6 people to help us out this weekend. You would in essence be helping out our Gala by helping this weekend. Please contact Maurice if you are interested in helping.

 


Spring 2017 Jog-a-thon

One of the Biggest (and Funnest) School Fundraising Events of the Year!

img_6367The McKinley Parent Teacher Club’s JOG-A-THON is one of our school’s biggest fundraisers and your support is vital. Most importantly, this is the only event where the kids take the lead in raising money for their school. Please visit the Jog-a-thon page to learn more about how your child can participate and qualify for some cool prizes!

T-Shirts are now available! Volunteers will be selling t-shirts before and after school next week. (Check calendar for details.) You can also order your 2017 Jog-a-Thon T-Shirt online and have it delivered to your child’s classroom.

Join the Jog-A-Thon Committee!

The McKinley Jog-A-Thon has always been a GREAT fundraiser, raising over $50K last year!  The big three events (SONO, Jog-A-Thon, and Gala) pay for the majority of the arts, dance, gardening, and the teachers’ training to maintain the school’s IB accreditation.

Please email or private message Mauricio Ahumada, maurice68@cox.net if you would like to help (he is fluent in Spanish too). He is requesting 7+ volunteers. The actual day of the event, March 17th, many additional volunteers will help with setup, lap counting, water, fruit, etc…

(Planning meetings will *always* be held in a brewery or somewhere equally as fun!)

TB Test for McKinley Volunteers

Need a TB test?
All McKinley volunteers are required to have an up-to-date TB test (within 4 years) to be a regular volunteer on campus.

Our local South Park Doctor, Dr. Tara Zandvliet, is offering to provide TB tests for just $10 (cost of supplies).

She will be across the street from McKinley at 3020 Felton Street on Wednesday, 10/5 from 7:30 – 9:00am for the skin prick and again on Friday, 10/7 from 7:30 – 9:00am for the reading. You must plan for BOTH days so mark your calendars! Click here for more details and ver aquí en Español.

We will attempt to make room for as many as possible, but if there is exceeding interest, we will choose based on maturity, grade level and schedule availability.

Cast and crew are expected to commit to scheduled rehearsals and performances. Once the cast announcement is made, all families will be presented with a variety of volunteer opportunities to contribute to the success of the show.

We encourage interested students to start preparing now for auditions.

We are in search of some volunteers to join the Communications Committee!  You will need access to a computer, and “meetings” are almost entirely through email.
We need:
  • Writers/Bloggers: Ability to post and/or edit on our McKinleyPTC.com website. (We use WordPress, which has a very short learning curve that we can teach you if needed) Most posts are emailed to us, and then we repost on the blog. Occasionally you will need to craft longer or original messages for web and print, so strong writing and grammar skills are appreciated. 🙂
  • Social Media-Savvy Posters: Help update and monitor the McKinleyPTC Facebook page (Facebook.com/McKinleyPTC) Posts from the website automatically post to Facebook, so this would mostly be helping respond to queries and comments on our page.
  • Website Designers or Coders: Experience editing websites using WordPress software and simple web form development (Google Forms).

McKinley’s 1st Annual CRAVE Art Show

Saturday, June 4th from 3-7 pm at Bread and Salt!

All ages are welcome and encouraged to attend this FREE event!

All preschool through 5th grade students will have their artwork on display at the show! Please join us in celebrating their hard work and creativity. We will have an opportunity drawing, activities and entertainment for the family!

Food and other items will before sale at the event. The amazing folks at Buona Forchetta will have pizza available. All proceeds will go toward the CRAVE 2016-17 Art Program!

A note from Ms. Ashley Bruce, CRAVE Program Director:

For the past 7 months, all preschool through 5th grade students have been taking part in art lessons being taught in their classrooms once a month, though the CRAVE Art Program. This is a new art program we started this year at McKinley and hope to continue for many years to come. The kids have enjoyed it so much and I have truly been blessed to teach along side many of our parent and grandparent volunteers, along with the support of our teachers and staff this year. CRAVE stands for CReative Arts Volunteer Enrichment, and it truly is a volunteer-run program that enriches the lives of these students, and is only possible with the support of all of these amazing people. 

Many of these art lessons have been tailored specifically to our schools IB program. It enforces the core themes of the IB program along with teaching the fundamentals of art, art history, and so much more. Art isn’t always easy, but it does teach us many great life lessons. These students have had to be risk-takers, problem solvers, open-minded, thinkers, and that’s just the beginning. It has been a joy for me to walk across campus at any given time and have a student come running up to ask me when their next art class is, or when the big art show is so they can tell their parents or grandparents. 

Please join us as we honor the students and their hard work this year. It’s a  busy this time of year, but even if you can make it for 20 minutes it would really make a wonderful difference in their lives. 

A note for the student artists:

Ask your parents, grandparents, family,  friends, and neighbors to come see the beautiful art work you have created this year in CRAVE!
You are all truly amazing and I am so proud of all of you for your hard work, enthusiasm and perseverance. You are all artists and you should all be proud of your accomplishments. It’s time for you to come to YOUR gallery show and be proud of all of the beautiful art you have created!

Save the Date: Green Day May 14th

The date is set for our spring Green Day, so mark your calendars for May 14, 9am-4pm.

The McKinley Beautification Committee has a Green Day several times a year. Some of our projects this time include:

  • Weeding and planting in the garden
  • Installing rain barrels
  • Art project for the kids
  • Cleaning up around campus
  • Finishing our new tool shed
  • Installing new tiles created this year by students
  • And giving our school some tender loving care!

This is a great opportunity to meet other McKinley families and keep our school looking awesome. No skills or experience necessary! Don’t forget your hat, sunscreen, and to wear comfy clothes that can get messy! See you there!

In the meantime, bring your clean, empty plastic water bottles to the bin in front of the office to be turned into a fabulous art project.

Spring Gala Wine Rally at the Rose

Please join us for a Spring Gala Warm-Up/Wine Rally: Tuesday April 12 from 6-8 at The Rose in South Park. Appetizers and good cheer will be provided.

There’s only one catch: we ask that you help us by donating a bottle of wine valued at $12 or more. No time to shop ahead of the event? Please note that The Rose has wonderful selections for every palette and will have many available to purchase for donating that evening. Bottles collected will be offered for bidding on the night of the Spring Gala.

In addition, please bring any unused gift cards you don’t plan to use; we can put them to good use at the Gala. This year, we are also hoping to put together a “Book Lovers” basket for kids and adults. Please bring any gently used books to donate to our cause.

This year’s campus beautification projects include:
•       Weeding and planting in the garden
•       Installing rain barrels
•       Art project for the kids
•       Cleaning up around campus
•       Finishing our new tool shed
•       And giving our school some tender loving care!
We will have projects for the kids and all skill levels.
No experience or skills necessary!
Come volunteer with enthusiastic students and parents and help make our school campus even better!

Jog-A-Thon is this Thursday!

IMG_9247Jog-A-Thon is this Thursday! Oranges are needed for the event. Please bring them to the Teacher’s Lounge this week. If you plan on bringing them on Thursday, please have them already cut.

McKinley Theatre Co. | Annie Audition Registration Forms Due Today!

Forms are due today! Please use this online form to register your student for an audition. Auditions will be held on Monday, October 19th after school by appointment only. We will email your student’s time tomorrow. For more details about the production and audition procedures, please see this post or the Annie homepage.

Note: If you have a 3rd-5th grader that is interested in joining the stage crew, we ask that you fill out a form as well.

The McKinley Elementary Alumni Reunion is this Saturday, October, 17th, from 1:00pm – 4:00pm.  We would love to have a few PTC volunteers donate an hour or two of their time. Please email info@mckinleyptc.com if you are able to help out with this fun event.

Casting Call!

Last year, the McKinley Theatre Company saw its highest ever turnout for auditions. It is exciting that our program has attracted so many talented young performers, and we love that the arts are thriving at McKinley!

However, when faced with such a large cast size, there are certain aspects that need to be taken into consideration. Our priority is to give all participating performers the best experience possible, allowing them to learn a few things, be safe, and have fun.

With that in mind, all parts will be auditioned for (including the ensemble/chorus).  

After filling out your Audition Registration Form, you will be given an audition time slot. Forms are due Friday, October 16th Late Registration Forms and “walk-in” auditions will not be accepted.

McKinley Theatre Program is put on entirely by volunteers. If your child is given a role in this year’s production, we count on your enthusiastic support along with your active participation. Volunteer Opportunities are listed on the website and the registration form.

The Sono Fest & Chili Cook-off is presented by the McKinley Elementary School PTC (Parent Teacher Club) and the San Diego Ceramic Connection (SDCC) every year on the first Sunday of December. This event brings together McKinley families, ceramic makers, stellar San Diego Chefs, clever craftersbeer brewers and lovers, local band groupies, the coolest neighbors in town, and chili enthusiasts!  The fine folks at SDCC contribute months of hard work shaping bowls for attendees to fill with delicious and unique chilis served up by generous neighborhood restaurants. Although we may pull it off like the pros, this event is 100% planned and operated by McKinley parent volunteers!

Funds raised by the sale of chili bowls, our vendors and donations made by our incredible sponsors will all contribute to the art, music and language programs (and beyond!)  at McKinley Elementary School. We rely on the success of this grand event to support these classes for our kids. So go tell your friends, your neighbors, and your friends’ neighbors… hey, it’s for the kids!
