Jog-A-Thon is this Thursday!

Only a few more days to go.  If you haven’t lined up your sponsors, yet we highly recommend trying out Pledgstar.  It’s extremely easy to use and is all set up for McKinley families.  Just register at http://pledgestar.com/mckinley.

If you’d like to volunteer the day of the event.  Please arrive between 8:30-11:00 am.  It’s a very rewarding event.  The kids take such pride in their school.

2014 Jog-A-Thon is October 23rd!DSC_0086

Picture this. Over one hundred kids lined up at their class’s  “start line.”…..The    theme to “Chariots of Fire” begins to blare over the loud speaker….. the excitement builds and then the announcer says, “Ready, set, go!”, and the kids are off…running to raise money for the school programs they love.

The McKinley Parent Teacher Club’s JOG-A-THON is one of our school’s biggest fundraisers and your support is vital.  Most importantly this is the only event where the kids take the lead in raising money for their school.  Did you know that most of McKinley’s music/dance, art, and Spanish programs are no longer funded by the school district? The only reason our kids get to participate in these programs is because we raise the money to fund them.

The kids will run laps around a track in the McKinley field and blacktop (approx. 1/8 mile lap for K-1st graders, 1/4 mile lap for 2nd-5th graders).  Most students run 8-10 laps.DSC_0466

Grades K & 1st:          9:40am – 10:00am
Grades 2nd & 3rd:       10:15am – 11:00 am
Grades 4th & 5th:        11:15am – 12:00pm

GET SPONSORS!

We are asking students who are able and willing to participate to get their families, friends, neighbors, and/or parent/guardian co-workers to sponsor them in the jog-a-thon.  Although most families have found it easier to collect “flat donations” from sponsors (e.g. $25 for the whole event), some families/sponsors prefer to make per lap pledges (e.g. $1/lap). You can download and print a pledge sheet here.

DSC_0160For 2014 we have a new online fundraising system through Pledgestar.

Just register at http://pledgestar.com/mckinley

Follow the instructions and it takes care of sending requests, thank you notes, and tracks donations for you–so easy!!

PRIZES!

Students will receive a raffle ticket for each sponsor they collect and will be entered into a drawing for lots of great prizes, such as bikes, rock climbing tickets, scooters, Boomers fun pack, and more. In order to be eligible for prizes, your child must turn in all donations by 4:00 pm to the classroom teacher on Wednesday, October 29th, 2014.

Class Party…………………………………The class that raises the most money per student

PARENT VOLUNTEERS

Parents also get to help out with the big event.  There will be a volunteer sign-up sheet sent out with pledge packet on Monday Oct 6, 2014.  We will need parents to donate oranges, help mark the kids laps, hand out oranges and water during the race, or simply get out and run with the kids to keep their spirits up.  If you are able to come and help out, it really is a blast!

A BIG THANKS TO THIS YEAR’S SPONSORS!

Exciting News for McKinley’s Joint Use Area!

The City of San Diego Park and Recreation board approved the General Development Plan for the Joint Use Park at McKinley on Thursday, September 18th!!!!  This is a great victory after YEARS of hard work by parents, staff and our amazing community to create a plan that balances the needs of the students and community as well as providing TREES and a large natural turf area for all to enjoy!
The San Diego Unified School District will now take over and move forward with the process of creating the park.  This process will include hiring a consultant to create construction documents as well as creating a construction schedule once the documents are approved.  As of today, they do not have a timeline for the process, but we are told that funding has been allocated to move forward with the process.   See a preview of plans here!  Joint Use

Back to Regularly Scheduled Programming…

All Schools on Regular Schedules Sept. 17
Upon a review of the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast for San Diego for tomorrow, Wednesday, September 17, the district will be returning all schools to a normal schedule. Our criteria for determining the move to minimum day was based on a combination of forecasted temperatures of 95 or higher and a heat index of 103 or higher for those schools in the district which did not have 100% air conditioning in occupied classrooms. The NWS’ previous regional heat advisory has not been extended beyond 7 p.m. this evening.

Although temperatures will be lower tomorrow, it will still be hot. Schools will continue to follow their Hot Weather Plans. Information is posted at www.sandi.net/hotweather

It is important to note that while we are returning to a regular schedule across the district, nearly half of our schools have previously-scheduled minimum days for Wednesday. Those regularly scheduled minimums days will remain in effect. This also applies to schools that have regularly scheduled minimum days on Thursdays.

***During these hot, hot days, we encourage you to have your child bring water to school.  Children can leave their water bottles in the back of the classrooms or with their back packs but, they will have access to drinking water.  Be cool, drink water!***

MINIMUM DAY – TUESDAY SEPT 16TH!!!

Primetime will be operating right after school and relocated to the areas with air conditioning on site.

Minimum Day Scheduled at Selected Schools Again Tuesday, Sept. 16

En Español

Weather Updates
*   National Weather Service – NOAA
*   ACPD Air Quality Forecast

San Diego Unified is implementing minimum day schedules at many schools including McKinley on Tuesday, Sept. 16, due to the continued heat wave in terms of temperatures, humidity and the heat index. Schools on regular day schedules (see list) are expected to operate under our Hot Weather Plan guidelines.
The decision to operate these schools on a minimum day is once again based on information and guidelines from the National Weather Service (NWS) indicating local temperatures of 95 and higher, with a heat index of 103 and higher – a combination termed by the NWS as “dangerous” health conditions. See the latest regional advisory here and our strong commitment to the safety and well-being of our students.
The district will closely monitor forecasted conditions for Wednesday.

MINIMUM DAY – MONDAY SEPT 15TH DUE TO HEAT WAVE!

Dear Parents/Guardians:

This is an important message from San Diego Unified School District. Your child’s school will have a minimum day on Monday, Sept. 15 due to the continued heat wave in terms of temperatures, humidity and the heat index. Schools without 100 percent air conditioning in classrooms, including your child’s school, will follow their regular minimum day start and end times. Primetime Extended Day Programs will be provided. Transportation schedules are being adapted to accommodate the reduced day.  Additional information regarding Monday’s minimum day operations and the affected schools is available on our website at www.sandi.net/minimumday . If you have questions, contact your school or the Quality Assurance Office at 619-725-7211.

ASE Applications will be accepted at PrimeTime tonight from 5-6PM
