Serve on the School Site Council

Our school is currently seeking nominations for the McKinley School Site Council.

IMG_6434Members of the School Site Council develop our Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) which identifies and addresses the instructional needs of students and specifies how categorical funds will be used to accomplish the goals outlined in the plan.

The SSC then meets monthly to monitor the implementation, and evaluate the effectiveness of the planned activities.

If you are interested in being on the McKinley SSC ballot, please email Ms. Ganderton at by October 30th.
Elections will be held in November and elected members serve a two-year term.

Good News About AC!

kidsfunMs. Ganderton got word from the district that the AC in the main building should be up and running by Thursday at the latest.

Let the good times roll!

Miss Tennies needs tennis balls!

tennis-balls-webIf you have old ones lying around, please send them with your kids to school. Ms. Tennies uses them for a variety of activities, including making ghosts for Halloween. She cuts up sheets and puts a tennis ball inside with a rubber band around it, then draws a silly face and the kids throw them around : )
Please look around and see if you can help out.
Thanks a bunch!

Jog-A-Thon is this Thursday!

Let’s Help Our Teachers Get Class Started!

alarm_clockOctober 16, 2015

Dear McKinley Families,

We have a problem and we need your help. 77 students were tardy to school today. Unfortunately, those numbers are not an anomaly. We’ve had ongoing challenges with a significant number of tardies each and every day. A late arrival impacts all learners.

8:25 a.m.     Bell rings, students line up

8:30 a.m.     Instruction begins in classrooms

Students arriving on campus after 8:30 will be directed to the office to get a tardy slip.

Your support in resolving this problem is greatly appreciated.

Deb Ganderton

Joint Use Field Update

McKinley Elementary Joint Use Field

Hello McKinley families!  As many of you know, our school will soon be benefitting from the addition of a Joint-Use field at the south edge of campus.  This is a project that has been MANY years in the making and we owe a lot of thanks to current and former McKinley parents as well as staff from McKinley, San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD), and Todd Gloria’s office for helping to make this idea into reality.

For anyone who is new to campus or who wasn’t able to participate in various planning meetings, the City (Todd Gloria’s office) generously donated funds for a Master Plan to be created for turning the “dirt field” at the south end of campus into a more useable turf field.  Amenities shown in the Master Plan include a walking path surrounding the field, addition of trees and other landscape, and access improvements including sidewalks and fencing upgrades.

This is their annual ‘go to college night’ where local elementary schools are invited to get a taste of the college athletic experience. Many booths & rides are set up in Aztec Village for the kids to enjoy before game time. If you are interested in tickets have your child bring an envelope with your name & how many tickets you want to Ms. Tennies (P.E. Teacher) in the next few weeks. As soon as she gets the vouchers she will send them home with your child. The vouchers will need to be redeemed for tickets as the Aztecs box office at Qualcomm Stadium. You do not need to do that in advance but if you have a big group & want tickets together (or better seats) you will want to get there before game day.

Casting Call!

McKinley Annie

Last year, the McKinley Theatre Company saw its highest ever turnout for auditions. It is exciting that our program has attracted so many talented young performers, and we love that the arts are thriving at McKinley!

However, when faced with such a large cast size, there are certain aspects that need to be taken into consideration. Our priority is to give all participating performers the best experience possible, allowing them to learn a few things, be safe, and have fun.

With that in mind, all parts will be auditioned for (including the ensemble/chorus).

After filling out your Audition Registration Form, you will be given an audition time slot. Forms are due Friday, October 16th Late Registration Forms and “walk-in” auditions will not be accepted.

McKinley Theatre Program is put on entirely by volunteers. If your child is given a role in this year’s production, we count on your enthusiastic support along with your active participation. Volunteer Opportunities are listed on the website and the registration form.

Monday, October 19th

by appointment only

Tuesday, October 20th

The Sono Fest & Chili Cook-off is presented by the McKinley Elementary School PTC (Parent Teacher Club) and the San Diego Ceramic Connection (SDCC) every year on the first Sunday of December. This event brings together McKinley families, ceramic makers, stellar San Diego Chefs, clever craftersbeer brewers and lovers, local band groupies, the coolest neighbors in town, and chili enthusiasts!  The fine folks at SDCC contribute months of hard work shaping bowls for attendees to fill with delicious and unique chilis served up by generous neighborhood restaurants. Although we may pull it off like the pros, this event is 100% planned and operated by McKinley parent volunteers!

Funds raised by the sale of chili bowls, our vendors and donations made by our incredible sponsors will all contribute to the art, music and language programs (and beyond!)  at McKinley Elementary School. We rely on the success of this grand event to support these classes for our kids. So go tell your friends, your neighbors, and your friends’ neighbors… hey, it’s for the kids!

It’s Family Friday!
