A Message from the Principal – Parent Meeting with the Superintendent Mon. 4/20 2:40 pm

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you received the letter sent home on April 10, 2015, with your child announcing my retirement at the end of this school year.  I look forward to a new chapter in my life, however, I will deeply miss your children, our community, and the many friends and relationships I have made during the last 14 years.  To help choose a principal that will be a good fit for McKinley, our Area Superintendent, Mitzi Merino, will hold a parent/community meeting on Monday, April 20th in the Auditorium from 2:40-3:40 p.m.  The purpose of the meeting is to get your input.  The staff will also have a meeting with Ms. Merino.  This process is designed to formulate specific criteria that meet the priorities of the McKinley Learning Community.  The school district hopes to complete the process prior to the end of the school year.  My last day will be June 30.  I will work closely with the staff and district to ensure there is a smooth transition for the 2015-16 school year!

Thank you,

Principal Julie Ashton-Gray

This meeting will be a chance for the parents to provide input into the criteria for our new principal.  What type of skills, knowledge, and/or experience are you looking for in our principal?  Bring your ideas to share with the school board.  We realize the meeting is during the day which may be tough for parents to attend.  If you can not attend and have specific criteria you would like to be included, please e-mail PTC President Betsey at  She will be sure to give your input at the meeting.

Weekly Papers!

Friday, March 20th is International Day of Happiness!

1560524_620192491424084_9158262456147699289_nThis week at Mckinley is Happiness Week!

There are many ways that your child and you can participate. A McKinley parent, Laura Carr, is helping to spread the word and has given us the information below:

“The United Nations has declared Friday, March 20th International Day of Happiness.  A company called Live Happy has generated the #happyacts challenge and will donate $1 to Big Brothers and Big Sisters for every person who accepts this challenge.  You must go to the website to sign up.  There is also a 24 hour podcasts streaming talks on Happiness from March 19th at 8pm to March 20th at 8pm.  There are Happiness walls sponsored all over the country.  My agency – First Avenue Counseling Centre is sponsoring a Happiness Wall in Balboa park on Friday.  This gives an idea for creating walls… There is also a Facebook page.

Each teacher/classroom is going to create a “Happiness Wall” and each day the kids will add their “acts of happiness.”  The teacher will randomly choose 2 kids each day and there will be a small token prize.  Teachers can integrate IB principals with this and can initiate discussion about happiness.  What does it mean?  How do we create it?  How do we nurture it?  How do different cultures express happiness?  and so forth….

On Friday, we have a playlist that the Mrs. Z is going to play during recess (maybe lunch).

There is also a Happiness wall in the main office (by the girl’s bathroom) that staff and parents can write on.  I will have stickies in the office for parents/staff to contribute.  I will also pick a few name during the week for a teacher to win a token prize.

During recess me (or someone) will take video from the top of the stairs.   And I will take pictures of each classes happiness wall.  Also, I’d love to play the “Happy” song and do some videoing of each classroom dancing – I got this idea from youtube.

Any parents are welcome to contribute ideas.  I would welcome any support!”

Laura Carr

Congrats Mrs. Z– California IB PYP Educator of the Year!

Mrs Z IB award

We are so proud of Mrs. Danielle Zdunich for being awarded the honor of IB Educator of the Year, Primary Years Program, by the California Association of IB Schools!

Mrs. Z is a beloved member of the McKinley community, and represents the high quality McKinley teachers that are dedicated to giving our children a strong foundation in understanding, cultural awareness, and inquisitiveness. Mrs. Z is an exemplary example to her students, a strong leader, and truly embodies the principles of an IB educator. We’re so lucky to have her!

Ms.Z recognition

“I love working at McKinley.  I love the IB program and think that it provides a unique and wonderful education allowing children to gain insight into the broader world around them.

I am a life long learner, and I aspire to create life long learners in my classroom.  I want my students to leave me with a desire to learn, a respect for all people, and appreciation for the differences they see between and amongst one another.  I want my students to feel that they can accomplish most anything if they set their minds to it.” – Mrs. Zdunich, 2nd/3rd Grade

Congratulations, Mrs. Z.!!

McKinley Alumnus Nathan Odom is a MasterChef Jr. Finalist!

Nathan Odom of North Park competing on MasterChef Jr.

Spoiler alert: a former McKinley Elementary and current Roosevelt Middle School student Nathan Odom is one of two remaining junior chefs on Fox’s hit reality cooking competition MasterChef Jr.!

Tune in Tuesday night to find out who wins, and to support one of our own! Congratulations, Nathan!

Nathan Odom, pictured on the far left, is a former McKinley student and participant in the Scratch after-school cooking class.

Nathan Odom, pictured on the far left, is a former McKinley student and participant in the Scratch after-school cooking class.

An excerpt from Nathan’s interview in UT San Diego:

“It’s widely known that North Park is considered one of San Diego’s food meccas, but the neighborhood is also home to a budding young chef.

Nathan Odom, a 13-year-old from Roosevelt Middle School, is currently starring on the third season of “MasterChef Junior,” a reality cooking competition on Fox.

On the show, he’s had to do everything from cook octopus to make complicated sauces good enough to impress judges Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot. Odom is among the top four chefs still competing and can be seen at 8 p.m. Tuesday vying for the top spot.

Odom, who was introduced to the TV show after watching the first season, tells us about his time in the spotlight.nathan_bio

Q: Why did you want to audition for “MasterChef Junior?”

A: Because it seemed like a lot of fun, and I wanted an excuse to cook every day.

Q: What was the audition process like?

A: It started out with us being tested on our basic skills, and the auditions got slightly harder every time. I found out I was on the show one morning while I was making breakfast.

Q: How long have you been cooking?

A: Since I was about 6 years old. I usually just helped out baking cookies and doing minor stuff. Occasionally I would help my Nonie (grandma) make pasta. But the main thing that taught me to cook was the Scratch Culinary Education Program at my school, a program started by Chef Ricardo Heredia that focuses on inner-city fourth- and fifth-grade kids who don’t have a lot of opportunities to cook with nice ingredients at home.

Q: Did you have to convince your parents to let you try things on your own?

A: My parents were always really supportive of the things I wanted to do, so it didn’t take much convincing for them to let me cook. I usually cook for my family about 30 to 40 percent of the time, but my mom and I both love using the kitchen, so we share the cooking!

Q: What are some of your favorite things to make?

A: I really enjoy making ramen and Japanese foods, but I also really like French pastries. I really like making macarons, mille-feuilles (puff pastry with vanilla and custard), Mont Blancs (puréed, sweetened chestnuts) and tarts.

Well done, Nathan!! Read more after the break, and don’t forget to tune in Tuesday night on Fox!  Read the rest of this page »
