Joint Use Park Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, May 23rd, 10:00 am

Joint Use Park Update –

Good news – Ribbon Cutting Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, May 23rd at 10:00 am. Please feel free to join us!

Gotta be patient news – Unfortunately, we will not be able to use the grass field until the city takes possession from the district. We don’t have a time line for this at this point in time, but will keep everyone posted.

Until the park transfer occurs, students will be able to use the full blacktop, but will remain off the grass field.

We will also be opening up an access point to campus each morning. You can now drop off your children at the Palm Street entrance. A staff member will be on duty at 8:10 each morning. Gate will be locked promptly at 8:25.

Everyone’s patience and understanding is appreciated.

Festival of the Arts in North Park: McKinley Art Booth

This Saturday, McKinley PTC will host a booth at the Festival of the Arts in North Park. It will be located on the Kids Art Block on Grim Street. We will offer hands-on art projects for children of all ages. This is a great opportunity to showcase McKinley’s art program and model community involvement for our children. We usually get a few prospective McKinley families stop by and ask questions about our school.

Blood Drive at McKinley Elementary – June 8, 2017

For their action, they are hosting a blood drive here at McKinley Elementary on June 8, 2017, from 10:00 am – 3:30 pm, and would like to invite all parents and staff to participate and donate blood.

Drop off/Pick up Zone Reminder

Dear Parents,

Please remember the white 3-minute zones around the school are for drop off/pick up only. Cars should not be left unattended in these spots.

Please help keep the traffic moving during the busy hours by quickly dropping off or picking up in the white 3-minute zones. If you plan to walk your child into school, please park in a long term parking spot.

North Park Festival of the Arts

New Student Soiree for Future Roosevelt Students – 5/16

Mark Tuesday, May 16, on your calendars for the Roosevelt New Student Soiree & IB Festival if your student is planning to attend Roosevelt IB Middle School in the Fall.

5:00 – 5:30pm: Informal meet and greet with staff, learn about school polices, and purchase uniforms.

5:30 – 7:00pm: Stick around for the IB Festival and see academic displays in the library, live performances by the Orchestra and Spirit Squad, visit the Scholastic Book Fair, and more.

 

5th Grade Action Week, 5/8 – 5/12

Support the 5th grade during Action Week as they make a difference in their community. Boxes will be placed throughout the school to accept donations for nonprofit organizations such as Make a Wish, PAWS, Goodwill, Blood Bank, Project Wildlife and many more.

The 5th graders will be selling drinks, food and treats on May 11th, Thursday so please bring your donations!

TEACHER & STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK May 8 – 12

Girls: Conservative black or white dresses, black dress pants or skirts with white top.
Boys: Black dress pants and white dress or polo shirt.

Please bring music stands if available.

REMINDER: While dropping off and picking up your children, please mind the speed limits on the streets around the school. Some of the neighbors have noticed cars driving pretty quickly down the streets close to school and then pulling over in front of the school for drop off.

A Request from our Principal

Dear McKinley Families,

We sent a district survey home last Friday and are asking each family to complete it (one survey per family, please). This survey is part of a district-wide initiative and serves to provide valuable information to both our site and our district.

We need a minimum of 25% of our surveys returned or our results will not “count.” Gotta’ tell you, I’ve kind of set myself up on this one….I brag about our families all the time. (This is true. I celebrate your contributions with folks I know and strangers I’ve just met.) When speaking with other educators, I invariably comment on the high percentage of parent involvement at McKinley Elementary School. Here’s how I’m reaching out for your support on this task – we’d like to have 100% of our surveys returned – one per family. (I’d also like world peace, but that’s a goal for another time…)

Your input is valued. Please take the time to complete this survey and return it to school by this Friday, May 5th.

McKinley Water Testing Results

Registration for the 2017-18 School Year

The McKinley registration window for new student enrollment will be open April 24 – May 19, 2017 for all grades. Office hours for enrollment are 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday – Friday (see enrollment guidelines and forms).

You will need the following documentation to register: Proof of residence (utility bill, rental agreement, etc…), birth certificate, and immunization records.

In order to assure your child’s placement for the 2017 fall school year, please enroll during these dates.

Temporary Closure for Playground

Our playground is almost finished! We’re only a few weeks away from our May 22nd ribbon cutting. A few last minute things need to be completed before we open it up for action. In order for Mike Pittman & his incredible crew to finish up we will TEMPORARILY be closing the playground all the way to the basketball courts. This closure will allow the construction crew to completely resurface the new areas with blacktop, build some wall balls, and re-paint so that everything is looking spiffy. The impact is that during morning recess & lunch times the students will have some new areas to play in, and it will be pretty crowded. Another ramification of this is that the two YMCA programs we have after school will be looking for areas to provide services to the children in their care. Please be aware that they may need areas previously used for after school play in order to set things up. Flexibility is key! Your support is appreciated!

Crave Art Show – 6/3/2017

2nd Annual CRAVE Art Show

When: June 3rd 2017, 3-7 pm

Where: Bread and Salt, 1955 Julian Ave, San Diego, CA 92113

What: An Art Show to display works by all McKinley students preschool-5th grade. Buona Forchetta will again be there with their amazing pizza and happy smiles. Almost Famous Entertainment will again be our DJ for this event spinning the tunes the kids request, and we will have make-and-take crafts for everyone to enjoy.

Who: Family, friends and neighbors are all invited to celebrate the amazing talent and hard work of all of our McKinley kids. Every month K-5 all have an extra art class we call CRAVE. All of their artwork has been saved all year, mounted nicely, and each and every student will have many of their pieces on display at this years art show! Last year we displayed over 1800 pieces of art all made by McKinley students. This year we plan to do the same.

We will have a sign-up sheet out soon for volunteers to come help with set-up and tear-down. Thanks for all the support this year and we can’t wait to see you all there!

Primetime-Summer 2017 Program

Jog-a-thon Update, Pizza Party & More…


The pizza party with the principal is on Thursday, April 20th. Invites have been sent home with students that earned $85+ for Jog-a-thon. (Teachers also have a list of qualifying students.)

Jog-a-thon Awards/Raffle is scheduled for Monday, April 24th, at the morning assembly. Trophies and other awards will be presented as well as raffle prizes.

Final stats are being tabulated and will be published soon on the Jog-a-thon event page.

McKINLEY PTC/FOUNDATION OPEN POSITIONS

President (2-year term), duties include:

  • Oversee all efforts of PTC committees, events, fundraisers and other activities
  • Meet with Principal monthly
  • Coordinate and write agenda for 6 Foundation meetings
  • Coordinate and write agenda for 5 PTC meetings
  • Coordinate calendar of activities for the school year
  • Oversee all financials, budgets and expenditures for PTC
  • Oversee communication with parents, teachers and community
  • Attend Foundation and PTC meetings
  • Vote on Board issues
  • Communicate with Board Members

Board Member (2-year term), duties include:

  • Represent general interest of all parents
  • Attend all Board and PTC Meetings
  • Vote on all Board issues
  • Communicate with Board members

City of San Diego will initiate water testing for lead across the San Diego Unified School District beginning April 4, 2017

Dear McKinley School, Parents and Staff:

At  McKinley School, the well-being of students and staff is our top priority. For that reason, San Diego Unified School District has asked the City of San Diego to test the water at our school site.

Beginning Tuesday, April 4, the City of San Diego will initiate water testing for lead across the San Diego Unified School District. It’s anticipated that the water at all district schools, including charter schools on district property, will be tested for lead by the end of the traditional school year in June.

The safety and health of students and staff across San Diego Unified is the highest priority for the district. Therefore, the city will be using a geographic approach that provides the most efficient testing. Five schools will be tested daily, beginning at the southeast corner of the district where some of the oldest district schools are located. City staff will work their way north and west until all of the testing is done. The comprehensive effort will take multiple months to complete due to the relevant regulatory requirements.

Testing will occur in the early morning hours, before the school day begins. Up to five samples will be taken at each site. The sampling locations may include drinking fountains, cafeterias and food preparation areas. The city will analyze the water samples and notify the school district of the results.

If results indicate that there is lead above allowable levels, district staff will determine the source of contamination and take appropriate action on a case-by-case basis (e.g., turn off water, replace fixtures and/or make plumbing repairs).

I want to reiterate that, at this time, there is no indication of unsafe levels of lead in our school’s water system, and the district’s testing is being done out of an abundance of caution. I will continue to monitor these efforts and will provide timely updates to our community. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

McKinley PTC Meeting – Wednesday, 4/12

 

Our PTC Meeting is April 12 at 6:15pm in the library.

Come and hear the latest news and information on upcoming McKinley events! Childcare (with pizza) will be provided in the cafeteria.

First Thursday Garden Work Party and First Friday Farm Stand

school garden maggieJoin us at the Octopus Garden every first Thursday this spring (April 6, May 4, June 1) from 12:30-3pm for a garden work party. We will be pulling weeds, spreading mulch, working with the compost, harvesting and tasting food from the garden, and tackling other special projects. Students must come with a parent or adult guardian.

Each first Friday (April 7, May 5, June 2) look for the farm stand at the front of the school from 2:45-3:30pm. See and taste what’s growing at the McKinley gardens!
Donations accepted but not necessary.

Leave your artistic mark on the Roosevelt campus by helping to create a mosaic masterpiece! We are looking for enthusiastic artists, craftspeople, students, parents & community members to be a part of the mosaic team, under the guidance of Rob Tobin, from the non-profit organization, ARTS.

The creation of our mosaic mural will be led by the non-profit arts organization – ARTS – A Reason To Survive. They also helped us create the mosaics at McKinley Elementary – our Octopus and Tree murals! This organization is dedicated to assisting youth by building hope, self-confidence, resiliency, and 21st century life & work skills through art!
